چکیده
To facilitate natural regeneration of loblolly (Pinus taeda L.) and shortleaf pines (I? ecbinata Mill.) in an overstocked, uneven-aged pine stand in southeastern Arkansas, hardwoods were controlled by either basal injection of TordonQ 1 0 1 R . s o i l a p p l i c a t i o n o f Velpat@ L , o r r o t a r y m o w i n g f o l l o w e d b y a b r o a d c a s t s p r a y o f TordonB 1 0 1 a p p l i e d o v e r t h e h a r d w o o d s t u b b l e . A lo-Year Evaluation of Prescribed Winter Burns in Uneven-Aged Stands of Pinus taeda L. and P. echinata Mill.: Woody Understorey Vegetation Response
The effects of burning cycles and pine basal area levels were assessed on natural pine regeneration and hardwood development in uneven-aged stands of loblolly andshortleafpines (Pinw taeda L. and P. echinata Mill.). The treatments included an unburned control and prescribed winter burrs at 3-, 6-, and 9-yr intervals. Basal area treatments were 9, 14, 18, and 23 m2 ha-’ for the merchantable-pine...
متن کاملCan Hardwoods Be Eradicated
The southern pines constitute an important commercial crop, and with proper management their rapid growth insures a renewable resource for the southern United States. On upland pine sites, hardwood shrubs and trees, herbaceous plants, and woody vines all compete with the pines for sunlight, growing space, moisture, and nutrients. The loss in pine volume production that results from this competi...
متن کاملDisturbance from the Initial Harvest Implementing Uneven-aged Silviculture in a Pine-hardwood Stand in Southwestern Mississippi’
Logging disturbance is important in uneven-aged stands because harvests are frequent, merchantable trees are retained, and regeneration may be present. Logging disturbance was monitored during the establishment of a study testing the application of uneven-aged silvicufture in an irregularly aged, pine-hardwood stand. Disturbances were: (1) seedbed conditions averaging 56, 16, 9, and 17 percent ...
متن کاملOverstory Species Composition, Structure, and Conservation Challenges of a Mature, Natural-Origin Pine Stand After Decades of Management
This study provides a preliminary assessment of 4 compartments on the Crossett Experimental Forest (CEF) being restored to old-growth-like conditions. After being partially cleared for agriculture or lumbered in the late 1910s, Compartments 1, 2, 11, and 12 were included in a combination of pulpwood-thinning and uneven-aged cutting-cycle studies for the next 50 y. Today, these compartments are ...
متن کاملRegenerating uneven-aged stands of loblolly and shortleaf pines: the current state of knowledge
Periodic regeneration is crucial to creating or sustaining uneven-aged (UEA) stands of loblolly (Pinus tuedu L.) and shortleaf (p echinatu Mill.) pines. Although both species are shade intolerant, they have silvical characteristics that are conducive to natural regeneration in UEA stands. Their seed production is fairly consistent and good, and the wind-disseminated seeds are well dispersed thr...
